Sanctioning Guidelines
(Excerpt from BCAHA Website)
What is a ‘Sanctioned Hockey Activity?
BC Hockey has adopted the following sanctioning guidelines.
You will note that most apply to on-ice activities only with consideration
for application for other events. BC Hockey does not sanction events
involving alcohol. All off ice team activities require sanctioning.
This includes ANY team event with the exception of tournaments games
and practices.
Any hockey activities, which fall within the time frame of May 1 to
August 15 of the calendar year, will not be sanctioned with the exception
of BC Hockey High Performance Programs.
Fund Raising Activities
BC Hockey Member Associations and above minor teams may apply for HC
Liability coverage for fund raising activities. These applications,
made on the BC Hockey
Special Event Request Sanction Forms, must be signed by the Association
/ Team President and returned to the BC Hockey Risk Manager for consideration.
Each request will be considered on an individual basis.
Dry land Training
BC Hockey member associations and above minor teams may apply for HC
Liability coverage for dry land training activities. These applications,
made on the BC Hockey approved form,
must be signed by the Association / Team President and returned to the
BC Hockey Risk Manager for consideration. Each request will be considered
on an individual basis.
On Ice Activities
1. Any activity which is part of a HC member association / team program
will be sanctioned. This does not include fall / spring conditioning
and evaluation camps which fall outside of the regular playing season.
2. HC member teams must be competing against other HC
member teams in order to have coverage. Coverage will not be extended
to HC member teams who participate against non-HC member teams; unless
competing against IIHF or US hockey member teams in events sanctioned
by the appropriate body.
3. “Benefit Games” in which a HC member team is playing
against a non-HC member team in a charity situation must be approved
on an individual basis. The HC member would be covered; however, the
coverage would not be extended to the non-HC member team and it is required
that they be made aware and that they acknowledge the non-coverage.
4. In cases where BC Hockey has granted “overage” status
to Minor or Junior hockey players, coverage is extended to the players
and those the player competes against. Refer to Bulletin 2002-17-A with
respect to overage status guidelines.
Officials
1. HC member officials will be covered for any competition between HC
member teams.
2. Coverage will not be provided to a HC member official who works any
game involving non HC member teams unless the Association has applied
for and been granted permission for a charity game.
3. Official Assignors will have HC Liability coverage for any BC Hockey
sanctioned activities in which they assign officials.
